Project Data Isolation
Claude Projects function as 'self-contained folders'. Any personal information or data shared within a Project will not leak into your General chat conversation memory.
Identifying Your Chat Space
Always check the 'Breadcrumbs' (text navigation) at the top of the UI. If you see a Project name there, it means the conversation is isolated and Claude will not use external memory for that specific context.

Hi Claude, what were some highlights from our recent conversations?
Step by Step
How to Check Claude's Conversation Memory
- Log in to your Claude AI account via your web browser.
- Start a new chat within the 'General' folder (ensure it's not inside any Project).
- Type a specific prompt asking Claude to review your previous conversations.
- Look at the reference section above Claude's response to see which chats are being referenced.
- Read the summary provided by Claude to verify the information it remembers.
Testing Memory Limits in Claude Projects
- Open an existing 'Project' in Claude that contains specific work context (such as Markdown files or custom instructions).
- Share a new piece of personal information within that Project chat (e.g., mention your favorite food).
- Start a new chat outside of that Project (General chat).
- Ask Claude about the personal information you just shared inside the Project.
- Confirm that Claude does not have access to the information from the Project chat.
- Check the 'Breadcrumbs' at the top of the screen to identify whether you are in a Project or a General chat.
