Default vs. Custom Output Differences
'Default' responses are usually textbook-like—accurate but generic. 'Custom' responses will interpret data through an expert lens, providing more strategic and in-depth input based on the role you set.
Persistent Settings
Once you set a 'Custom Role' and response style, these settings will remain active for every conversation within that notebook until you change them again. You don't need to set them repeatedly.
Step by Step
Workspace Setup & Custom Role in NotebookLM
- Click the 'New Notebook' button to start a new session.
- Click on the notebook title at the top of the screen (usually 'Untitled Notebook') to rename it.
- Enter a specific and descriptive name (e.g., 'Freelance Pricing Strategy Q2') to help the AI understand your workspace context.
- Look for the panel or section titled 'Define your conversational goal, style, or role'.
- Click on the 'Custom' option to open the text input field.
- Enter the role description or the tone of voice you want the AI to use in the text box.
- Use the response length toggle if you want 'Shorter' or more detailed answers.
- Start typing your question in the chat box to receive answers tailored to your assigned role.
